Texas

Update: Here's the clip.

Sitting here listening to Tom Sullivan and he brought up Rick Perry saying Texas can secede from they union. They can't. After the Civil War they did secede to the South. But in order to be readmitted they had to nullify the original stipulation of the right to secede again.

Just wondering how long it is going to take the garbled din of populism to get a clue about reality and end this discourse before the left can make political hay out of it.

If Rick Perry is making his move for President he should brush up on his state's history before making such claims.

how about if the south were to secede from the union?

i'm thinking texas can make it on its own - think of it - aren't they like the eighth largest economy in the world?

I believe the South would win this time and very quickly. Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana could just shut the valves and let the North freeze in the dark. Shut off the flow of agriculture products.

Another thing I read not so long ago was that the military is becoming mostly made up of Southerners because fewer of those from the left volunteer for service.

So if Obama wants to be compared to Lincoln then he may just get his chance.

I just got back from your post. Couldn't think of anything to say other than...hey did you manage to sneak yourself in one of those shots ?

She was all over everything today. XM radio talk, foxnews, local news sites. Amazing how one day she is a nobody next day internationally known. She'd never been kissed but today she was hugged by millions.

I just hope they don't try and refine her with a makeover to be more friendly to a camera. She's fine just like she is. I did notice she had her hair styled for any interview.

You know I like certain rogues against the norm. Sometimes I wear eyeglasses indoors just ti irritate people who think they have to see my eyes to send signals to my ears.

Actually, IOpian, Governor Rick "Haircut" Perry said nothing of the sort. What he said was that the Federal Government is encroaching on the rights of the various States in huge ways, and he seeks to re-affirm the 10th Amendment. He is quite upset my the mandates that the Feds are attaching to the Spendtacular Bill and had even considered denying the money.

Texas and the various 50 States are, by definition, sovereign, and any right not specifically given to the Federals by the Constitution are to be in the purview of the states and the people, respectively.

Now, naturally, the mainly liberal big-government press has made a great deal of this but only emphasize that Gov. Perry wishes to hold the federal dogs off in favor of the state government.

We tried that last year and it didn't make it past the Oklahoma legislature. I do believe they are going to try to pass it again this year. Same idea. Oklahoma is a sovereign state, you know, one of those states in the United STATES not the United People.

This is the right path to block an invasive Federal government which has been the political struggle since day one as to the power of the federal government in our republic.

The problem is this misconception that we have a democracy. Don't know about you but I didn't vote on the stimulus bill. In a democracy we all would have voted.

So states asserting their place in this design is exactly the right approach for now.

Federal money is the opiate of the masses. They are little more than a legal mafia.

You can read this the way you want to, but Texas did not surrender all of it's rights by my view:

Sec. 1. FREEDOM AND SOVEREIGNTY OF STATE. Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States, and the maintenance of our free institutions and the perpetuity of the Union depend upon the preservation of the right of local self-government, unimpaired to all the States.

Sec. 2. INHERENT POLITICAL POWER; REPUBLICAN FORM OF GOVERNMENT. All political power is inherent in the people, and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient.

Sounds a bit like the "Declaration of Independence", no?
